Koynanagar is situated in Satara District of Maharashtra and is well connected by road. It is a frequented tourist attraction of Maharashtra, famous for its Koyna Dam and the Koyna Hydroelectric Project which is the largest completed hydroelectric project of India.The dam is built across River Koyna, which is one of the major tributaries of River Krishna.
The Nehru Gardens, the Botanical Gardens and Kumbarli Ghat viewpoint are the most popular destinations in the vicinity. Although a sparsely populated town, hordes of picnickers mostly from Pune, come to this area during the monsoon season. Cold waterfalls, rolling green hills with misty tops, foggy corners are seen in the Kumbarli Ghat which is a mountain pass.
